Course Description

This course examines breathwork as an evidence-based intervention for stress regulation in clinical practice. Participants explore respiratory biomechanics and autonomic nervous system modulation to understand how controlled breathing techniques influence patient outcomes. Content reviews current research supporting breathwork across diverse settings including acute care, mental health, primary care, maternal-child health, and palliative care. The course addresses trauma-informed and culturally sensitive implementation, safety considerations, contraindications, and patient selection criteria. Patient education strategies, documentation practices, and interprofessional communication are covered alongside healthcare provider self-regulation techniques for burnout prevention. Appropriate for registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, and licensed healthcare professionals seeking to integrate non-pharmacological interventions into evidence-based practice.

Purpose/Goal:

The purpose of this course is to equip licensed healthcare professionals with evidence-based knowledge and practical skills to safely and effectively integrate breathwork interventions into clinical and wellness practice. The course enhances understanding of respiratory physiology, stress regulation, and autonomic nervous system function while supporting patient-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care. By strengthening both clinical application and provider self-regulation skills, the course aims to support improved patient outcomes, professional resilience, and holistic, evidence-informed practice.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion you will be able to do the following: 1. Describe breathwork modalities and their physiological mechanisms for stress regulation in clinical practice. 2. Explain respiratory anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics as they relate to effective breathwork interventions. 3. Differentiate sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system responses to various breathwork practices. 4. Evaluate current evidence on breathwork interventions for stress reduction, patient well-being, and health outcomes across diverse populations. 5. Integrate evidence-informed breathwork techniques into nursing and interdisciplinary care plans across varied patient populations and clinical contexts. 6. Implement trauma-informed and culturally sensitive breathwork practices that ensure patient safety, respect, and ethical care. 7. Identify safety considerations, contraindications, and risk mitigation strategies for breathwork in clinical settings. 8. Demonstrate patient education, communication, and documentation strategies for breathwork interventions in the clinical record. 9. Utilize breathwork practices for personal stress management and burnout prevention.

Course Content:

• Foundations of breathwork in healthcare practice • Respiratory anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics of breathing • Stress physiology and autonomic nervous system regulation • Evidence base for breathwork interventions • Clinical applications across nursing and interdisciplinary settings • Trauma-informed, cultural, and ethical considerations • Safety, contraindications, and risk mitigation strategies • Patient education, communication, and documentation practices • Healthcare provider self-regulation, resilience, and burnout prevention • Clinical case studies and practice integration

Implicit Bias Statement:

This course acknowledges that breathwork practices have diverse cultural, spiritual, and historical origins across global traditions. Healthcare providers are encouraged to approach these interventions with cultural humility, recognizing that patients' backgrounds, beliefs, and prior experiences shape their receptivity to breathing techniques. Clinicians should assess individual patient preferences and values, avoid assumptions based on cultural or demographic characteristics, and adapt language and instruction to ensure patient-centered, respectful care. The course emphasizes that breathwork can be presented in secular, physiologically focused frameworks while honoring the diverse perspectives patients bring to therapeutic encounters.
